I would really like to know more about the history of 146.52 simplex, AKA Area 52 here in Phoenix, AZ. I am starting this thread to compile milestones, facts, interesting characters, crazy events and memories. This will help others understand why this frequency is what it is, a great bunch of people of all walks of life, ready to help others and... most of the time everyone gets along!
I am really impressed by the number of active users that have been here for 15-35+ years. These are the people I am reaching out to for facts and events that have shaped the character of this frequency. I hope to hear from you on this thread and will try to compile the facts and stories into a single timeline for all to enjoy.
Here is what I remember so far:
- This is not a club, it is considered a group, we prefer to QSO simplex, the real way!
- The group started circa June 1981, on 146.52
- The group moved to 146.54 due to harassment of signal chasers on the "call channel"
- Woody K7CQX moved back to 146.52 and Tom WB9DZS made the first contact, been here ever since
- There used to be regular 2-meter QSO between Phoenix, Tucson and other DX
- Jack was/is quite a character - Still the character as of March 8,2022
- The name Area 52 started around the time Joel KG7ALU came on the channel and the chat turned to aliens (illegals)
- Pat K7NYS, now N2MTB started a Facebook group page and coined 'AREA 52'
- Dec 24, 2016 Mark - W7HFX (me) started this forum
- Rob, N7END used to be a decent operator. Somehow his SWR went bad and he's been on 52 'pissing people off' ever since. His false accusations and general H&D has caused several of us to go digital (YSF) on 52 whenever he keys the mic, but we don't interfere with him - he jams us. WE WILL USE DIGITAL if there are no analog QSO's in progress. According to END's elmer, Woody, K7CQX, "You can use any damn mode on any damn frequency at any damn time"
We will try to add what I hear and remember on the air. This is only a small start and hope to have many replies and funny stories that others will share.
