I started with this $20 RTL-SDR Blog R820T2 RTL2832U 1PPM TCXO SMA Software Defined Radio (Dongle Only)

I also own a FLEX 5000a which open my eyes to the capabilities of SDR and is really the best HF radio out there IMHO.
I also have a SDRplay RSP2 ($160) which is a great all-band receiver I purchased for VHF/UHF panadaptor/waterfall purposes. I find myself using this a lot without an antenna to monitor my own transmissions.
I couldn't resist a $20 dongle to experiment with and it's portability. I even have it working on my Android phone, more on that later.
UPDATE- I sold my SDRplay and now have 2 RTL-SDR dongle, 1 v2 and 1 v3. The reason I sold it was that SDR# does not work with SDRplay (they hate each other).
